Yang Energy at PCBC (Pacific Coast Builders Conference)

The last few days I have been in San Francisco attending PCBC (Pacific Coast Builders Conference) noticing all the "Yang" energy associated with it. Yes, the building industry is dominated by males, but that's not the only Yang energy permeating the show. From presenters and panels to performance and products, Yang energy is incorporated through energy efficiency, illuminating innovations and marketing methodologies.

Wednesday's Opening Keynote was given by Guy Kawasaki. Having worked at Apple and written several books, Kawasaki's presentation title was, "Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions".

This bestselling business guru shared, "It's not about manipulating people. Enchantment transforms situations and relationships. It converts hostility into civility and civility into affinity."

In an industry struggling to survive - design/build/construction for residential, commercial, mixed use or multifamily - enchanting your customers is the key to thriving. He gave 10 points on which to focus as part of the marketing and reinvention of any industry. These points were mainly the Yang energy of "doing" and acting on a planned path.

One of the larger displays at PCBC was the Outdoor Living Showcase, which boasted a cargo- contain-turned-building. Yes, it was small, but the ability to put it into a location and have it be a viable structure very quickly is fascinating. The exterior color is a very bright yellow - a Yang color.

Energy efficiency is high on the minds of those in the building industry due to the CalGreen Building Codes that took effect on January 1, 2011. There were several companies with new light innovations. Some were the design of LED lamps. Others were solving or fine-tuning "downsides" of products.

For instance, Halo has a new design on the baffle and trim of their canned light that eliminates the "hot spot" on a wall. A "hot spot" is where you can see the arc created - due to the contrast between light and shadow - from the circular rim of a recessed canned light fixture. As a designer, I have wanted a "wall washer" without the inherent hot spot as it distracts from the beautiful object I want to highlight.

Halo's LED lighting comes in 4" and 6" sizes. The 6" can be used as retrofits in old incandescent and halogen fixtures. The 4" size is for new construction. The Color Identification ranges from 2700 degrees Kelvin to 4000 degrees Kelvin allowing a broad spectrum from which to choose for design and personal preference selection.

LED lighting benefits us in many ways. It reduces our energy costs. "By lowering the demand for electricity, power plants generate less energy, thus lowering the amount of carbon emissions discharged into the environment", according to the Halo LED lighting brochure.

Matrix Lighting Limited's display focused on LED light bulbs. Their "ViriBright", 5 watt LED Lamp use 80% less energy than a 40 watt incandescent. LED lamps are Mercury-free (fluorescent bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs contain Mercury), long lasting (> 20,000 hours), come in a variety of color temperatures and have a Beam Spread of 270 degrees. AND the real plus from a design perspective, they look great! Very innovative design!

Thursday's keynote speaker was Chip Heath, with a presentation titled, "Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard". Including stories from his book, "Switch," as well as many not in print, he stressed how important it is for us to "switch" from our focus on the problems in life and find the "bright spots."

As a company, get in touch with the feelings of the target audience. Also, be willing to take risks. Encourage employees to take risks, even if they fail.

Fear of embarrassment or being fired are a couple of reasons employees don't take risks. By encouraging them, and possibly even rewarding them, for trying something different (obviously using some common sense and prudent fiscal responsibility), new thoughts and directions evolve, producing change.

Here we are again, looking at the Yang energy of change and "Bright Spots". Be they bright spots of lighting (no hot spots on walls), innovation (great looking LED lamps and bright yellow cargo-container buildings) or marketing (find and trust your "bright spots"), this year's PCBC show possessed lots of Yang energy.
