Lighting Design & OLED Energy Efficient Technology – (continued)

by Linda Lenore on June 18, 2011

My last post talked about new lighting design products using OLED, especially those I had seen at Light Affair IX 2011 held at the PG$E Energy Center in San Francisco. I've had some inquiries for more information, so let me provide you with visuals (including some with better contrast) as well as further info.

First, the seminar I attended was given by Peter Y. Ngai with Acuity Brands in Berkeley. His philosophy around lighting design mimic mine in many ways, so please read my previous blog post.

Kindred’s slim profile gestures with companionship. Kindred invites us to gather

Acuity's OLED lighting design product, Kindred, invites us to gather

In examining Acuity's website, it appears the company's philosophy on lighting design is the same. It states, "The Acutiy Brands OLED design center is passionate about OLED lighting. To us, working with OLED goes beyond simply thinking about a new light source. OLED has personality - we see it as a collaboration between lighting and architecture where we can capture the essence of OLED and transform it into emotion, interaction and illumination that is not only useful, but also human. Our team has traveled the globe to share and celebrate these new approaches to lighting."

You can feel the passion they have both about their product and their philosophy. This is very exciting to me. So many companies or products are looking only at the energy efficiency of a product or the bottom line costs.

This philosophy sounds similar to my Green Chi Designs business philosophy. My passion and purpose is something I love to share with people - educating them so they can make wise choices for their projects and their lives.

Here are some of the OLED lighting designs from Acuity and how they describe them. I'm going to copy these descriptions from their website as they describe the product plus share the thoroughness behind the product design decisions.

"The Kindred is an iconic expression of elegance that connects with the occupant by creating a personal oasis of light. An achievement made possible only with OLED, Kindred’s thin profile and curvature immerse the user in a soft volume of light and create a sense of companionship and comfort. When mounted in close proximity, it transforms the interaction within an interior space to a more human and personal experience."

"Glare-free and boasting superb color quality as well as inherently high luminaire efficacy, Kindred comfortably delivers over 3000 lumens, making it suitable for general lighting in office, retail, hospitality, restaurant, and feature spaces. Even in the zero-energy state, Kindred exists in perfect harmony with the space, blurring the lines between architecture and lighting. Kindred and its use of OLED technology mark a new era in architectural lighting design where energy efficiency, quality lighting, and emotional resonance coexist."

The design of Glimpse is contemporary, yet a bit retro in style. It is designed with cutting edge technology, yet feels familiar.

"At first glance, Glimpse appears to be a floating cushion of light. With a closer look, one discovers the unexpected – the cushion of light is hollow. Inside is a glowing volume of space, a form and expression for a luminaire that would be impossible with any other light source."

"Glimpse brings an element of pleasant surprise by celebrating what is not there. It assures us that high-tech can be comforting by juxtaposing vibrant color against a familiar polka-dot pattern. The luminaire is ideal for decorative lighting applications that call for modern design flair. It emits half of its light upward to provide ambience with soft lighting directed downward to illuminate the task below."

LightFacet exemplifies the character of OLED lighting. It allows light itself to become the luminaire.

"LightFacet’s “first-of-its-kind” transparent acrylic frame compliments OLED light beautifully. The character of the light is simple, pure, and honest and it is celebrated by allowing light itself to become the luminaire. With wiring that is carefully concealed the panels appear to be suspended in midair - all you see is light."

"The design is clean, sophisticated, and uplifting. When the luminaire is on, LightFacet emits a soft volume of light directed downward. Each OLED glows and their cumulative pattern defines the overall luminaire shape. Edges of the acrylic reflect the colors of the surroundings and the luminaire seems to sparkle."

"LightFacet is ideal for feature space lighting and architectural accent. It melds transparency with light and shine to create a dynamic interplay of visual effects."

Experience true design freedom with Revel. Regimented lighting layouts are a thing of the past.

"Revel offers us the ability to sculpt a ceiling with brightness and texture. With superb color and brightness control, the Revel is a first-of-its-kind lighting system that enables OLED luminaires to deliver light where and when it is needed."

Now lighting can be placed exactly where needed to reduce areas of glare and darkness, plus it creates visual texture and interest on the ceiling.

"At the basic building block level, each Revel module targets a discrete area of light. Revel’s innovative plug-in mounting system allows designers to locate modules precisely, creating patterns tailored for their unique lighting needs. End-users also benefit from a lighting system that inherently adapts to multiple requirements while effectively managing energy usage through a new lighting concept called application efficiency."

"Achieving these objectives through freedom of design, simple configuration, volumetric lighting, and efficient use of OLED, the Revel delivers an enhanced visual environment while supporting sustainability imperatives."

I hope you have enjoyed looking at these incredibly innovative lighting designs created through the use of OLED. I find them enchantingly beautiful.
