Eco Housing and Green Remodel Ideas: Looking at Menlo Passive’s Laundry, Master Bedroom and Bath

by Linda Lenore on June 6, 2011

Master bedrooms, master bathrooms and even laundry areas are often the focus of a green remodel since there are new interior design trends and so many energy efficient products available to reduce energy costs as well as water consumption. The home improvement characteristics found in the eco building and green home plans from the first passive home in San Mateo County, Menlo Passive, affords us a great opportunity to explore some of these features.

Master bathroom & eco-cabinets

This sunlit master bathroom contains eco-cabinets with formaldehyde-free frames, LED lighting, low-VOC paints and water efficient fixtures for shower, bath and sinks.

These days most home buyers are looking for a large "master bedroom suite" with a fabulous master bathroom creating a retreat, spa or sanctuary for the owners. Luxurious qualities affording the sense of relaxation, restfulness and resort living make this master bedroom and master bathroom all of the above.

You won't be disappointed in this eco house as the bedroom feels like you are in a park with a grand old oak tree outside the glass French doors and the bathroom boasts two windows for lots of sunlight. This sunlit master bathroom contains eco-cabinets with formaldehyde-free frames, LED lighting, low-VOC paints and water efficient fixtures for shower, bath, sinks.

Another eco housing features of this master bathroom is its dual-flush toilet to conserve water. As part of the master suite, the good Feng Shui bathroom has placed the toilet in a preferred area away from view upon entering both the master suite and bathroom.

Programmable heated towel bar

This programmable heated towel bar provides localized heat as well as suppling a warm towel. Being programmable, it can be set to heat prior to waking up on cold mornings to reduce the need to heat the whole house.

The programmable heated towel bar provides localized heat as well as warm towels. This will reduce the need to "turn on the furnace " for the whole house just to heat the bathroom, especially if the "bedroom wing" is not occupied.

The Feng Shui bedroom layout is designed to support qualities for the above mentioned relaxation, restfulness and rejuvenation desired. Plus the location within the home is built to provide solid, loving relationships since the Feng Shui design places it in what is known as the "Feng  Shui marriage corner". The Feng Shui marriage corner is the area in the back right of the home and supports the qualities associated with the feminine, such as nurturing and birthing. Birthing can be the birthing of ideas, so this area is also a great location for stimulating the ideas for new business ventures. A perfect environment is created for this with nature surrounding the room.

Front load Washer & Condensing Dryer

The front load washer & condensing dryer provide many features. Both save energy. The dryer doesn't need venting and dries at lower temperatures. The washer conserves water and is less damaging to clothes.

Provided as part of the eco housing design, the washer and dryer are included as part of the purchase price of the home. Located close to the garage in what might also be a bit of a mudroom off the kitchen, you will find the front load washer and condensing dryer.

It has been a joy for me to share the passive features with the environmental architecture, the eco buildings system and interior design details of this home, plus other green house plans along with Feng Shui design and Feng Shui decorating ideas featured in Menlo Passive. As green remodel interior design elements, these are home improvements you can implement into your green home plans.
