Welcoming the Chinese New Year

We are about to enter the Chinese New Year - the Year of the Metal Rabbit. With it comes an abundance of opportunities if we are prepared for them. Let's start with traditional ways in many cultures to greet the New Year.

First, clean your home - inside and out from top to bottom.  If you don't have time to do the whole house right now, start cleaning in the kitchen. Remove the old staples - flour, salt, sugar and rice. Donate them to a shelter or someone who can use them. Purchase new staples for yourself. Clean the refrigerator by removing the leftovers and thoroughly cleaning the inside.

Second, prepare food the day before the Chinese New Year to be eaten on the first day of the New Year. Different symbols of good luck and prosperity for the New Year are: rice for health and wealth, greens (collard, kale, etc.) for prosperity  as well as good and fresh beginnings, black-eyed peas for good luck, mandarine oranges and tangerines for abundance, whole fishes (including the head and tail) for abundance, a whole chicken for completeness, a whole ham for wealth, uncut noodles for longevity, bamboo shoots so everything will go easily and effortlessly, mushrooms to help grow and expand your business rapidly, and if you want children, lotus seeds or pomegranate seeds to ensure many children.

Third, go to your front entry. Clean the door removing any cobwebs and polishing the handle. We want to have bright, shinny objects to attract the good energy to your front door. Sweep the front stoop - sweeping towards the house. In doing this we actually want to gather all that is outside and "deposit it" into the house. You can place the debris you've swept up into a container located inside the house to be released at a later time.
